The Bell at Mingun & the worlds largest unfinished Stupa

HEADING UP RIVER TO MINGUN TO SEE THE FAMOUS BELL ..

WE PASS THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE ..

P1300629.jpglarge_P1300633.jpg

BEFORE GETTING TO THE BELL, WE GET A CLOSE UP LOOK AT WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LARGEST STUPA IN THE WORLD, BUT UNCOMPLETED, WE ARE TOLD IT MAY NOW BE THE LARGEST PILE OF BRICKS ..

... IMPRESSIVE ALL THE SAME ..

large_P1300634.jpglarge_P1300637.jpg

MARIANNE - LOOKING FRESH AS A DAISY, IN FRONT OF SOME MORE PILGRIMS ... THEY SURE DO GET PACKED INTO, & ONTO, THOSE TRUCKS ..

P1300639.jpgP1300641.jpg

A FEW FOOD SELLERS AT THE ENTRANCE -- WE TURN LEFT AND START THE WALK AROUND THE BUILDING .. THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE RIGHT AT THE VERY TOP & I AM REALLY SORRY I DID NOT GO UP THERE TOO ...

large_P1300642.jpglarge_P1300643.jpg

large_P1300644.jpgP1300647.jpg

large_P1300648.jpgP1300650.jpg

PERHAPS THIS IS THE PILE OF BRICK THAT WAS MENTIONED ..

large_P1300652.jpglarge_P1300655.jpg

AT THE BACK NOW & THE CRACK CAUSED BY AN EARTHQUAKE IS CLEARLY VISIBLE ..

large_P1300657.jpgP1300659.jpg

large_P1300660.jpglarge_P1300662.jpg

AFTER GOING RIGHT AROUND THE STUPA, IT IS ONLY STEPS TO THE LARGEST UN-CRACKED BELL IN THE WORLD - Mr SO, TRYING HIS BEST TO CRACK IT ON THE LEFT ...

MEANWHILE, OUTSIDE - THE KIDS ARE PLAYING ..

large_P1300666.jpglarge_P1300669.jpg

SHE DOES NOT SEEM TOO IMPRESSED ..

large_P1300673.jpglarge_P1300675.jpg

MIKE PROBABLY HAD A GO AT RINGING THE BELL.

AND HERE IS THE BUILDING THAT HOUSES THE BELL ..

large_P1300677.jpgP1300678.jpg

ANOTHER ONE NOT TOO IMPRESSED ..

large_P1300681.jpgP1300682.jpg

AND THE KIDS PLAY ON ..

WE WALK DOWN THE STREET PASSING QUITE A LOT OF SOUVENIR SHOPS ..

large_P1300684.jpglarge_P1300686.jpg

large_P1300687.jpglarge_P1300688.jpg

AND COME ACROSS THIS STUNNING BUILDING ...

large_P1300691.jpglarge_P1300693.jpg

I HAD A SAW LIKE THAT ONCE. GREAT FUN TO MAKE IT SING ..

large_P1300695.jpglarge_P1300697.jpg

large_P1300698.jpgP1300702.jpg

MOST PEOPLE WENT OVER THE BUILDING BUT I SAT IN THE SHADE WITH JACKIE & HAD A DRINK OF SOMETHING COLD ... JACKIE HAS BY NOW PARTIALLY RECOVERED FROM THE DREADED LURGIE THAT AFFECTED A FEW OF THE PASSENGERS .

BUT NOT THE KENYANS WHO HAVE NOW DEPARTED.

THEY WERE RUMOURED TO HAVE DRUNK 32 BOTTLES OF COMPLIMENTARY GIN BETWEEN THEM WHICH MIGHT EXPLAIN IT .. THEIR NOT GETTING ILL, NOT THAT THEY HAVE NOW DEPARTED ..

large_P1300703.jpglarge_P1300704.jpg

P1300705.jpglarge_P1300706.jpg

LOVELY TOES ...

AND YES - THAT IS A CHICKEN IN THE LADIES LAP ..

P1300710.jpg

SITTING THERE, I HAD A GIRL FANNING ME & SHE DID THAT ALL THE WAY DOWN THE STREET BUT STILL DID NOT MAKE A SALE I AM AFRAID.

large_P1300718.jpg

I HEADED FOR SOME SHADE & A NICE CUP OF TEA HERE. THAT IS SOME SORT OF PRESS BEHIND THE LITTLE GIRL ..

large_P1300723.jpglarge_P1300726.jpg

BACK TO THE BOAT - TOURISTS ARRIVING AS WE GET READY TO LEAVE ..

P1300736.jpgP1300740.jpg

I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TAXI ..

large_P1300741.jpglarge_P1300748.jpg

large_P1300754.jpg

WE HEAD NORTH ... PASSING MORE LIFE ON THE RIVER. THINGS YOU ARE UNLIKELY TO SEE ANYWHERE ELSE ..

large_P1300770.jpglarge_P1300777.jpg

large_P1300783.jpglarge_P1300785.jpg

large_P1300786.jpglarge_P1300788.jpg

large_P1300792.jpglarge_P1300795.jpg

large_P1300798.jpglarge_P1300799.jpg

large_P1300805.jpglarge_P1300809.jpg

large_P1300812.jpglarge_P1300817.jpg

THESE PEOPLE ARE STUCK ON A SAND BAR ...

large_P1300819.jpglarge_P1300823.jpg

MARK TWAIN AGAIN, CHECKING THE DEPTH ..

& SHE IS TELLING EVERYONE WHAT TO DO ..

large_P1300825.jpglarge_P1300837.jpg

ANOTHER ONE STUCK - ONE OF OUR COMPANION SHIPS

large_P1300838.jpglarge_P1300840.jpg

WE SPEND A WHILE HAULING THEM OFF THE SAND BAR ..

WE STRUCK A SAND BAR AS WELL. QUITE THE SHOCK WHEN THE BOAT GRINDS SUDDENLY TO A HALT.

large_P1300843.jpglarge_P1300847.jpg

THIS IS THE PILOTS HELPER. HE GOES OUT IN FRONT OF OUR BOAT CHECKING THE DEPTH.

large_P1300852.jpglarge_P1300860.jpg

MORE RIVER LIFE ..

STANDING ROOM ONLY ON THE FERRY .. PACKED IN LIKE CATTLE YOU COULD SAY ..

large_P1300866.jpglarge_P1300867.jpg

large_P1300878.jpglarge_P1300940.jpg

large_P1300951.jpglarge_P1300956.jpg

large_P1300968.jpglarge_P1300969.jpg

large_P1300972.jpglarge_P1300979.jpg

large_P1300983.jpglarge_P1300988.jpg

large_P1300991.jpglarge_P1300994.jpg

AND SO ENDS ANOTHER GREAT DAY ON THE AYEYARWADY RIVER. YOU SHOULD TRY IT SOME TIME SOON.
